Hello! I’m Dr. Nina Nguy

I am a partner, a mother, a career woman, and a sister. I enjoy trying new recipes, going on play dates with my children, and playing board games with friends. I LOVE going to comedy clubs, and listening to The Moth Radio Hour, Fresh Air, and TED Talks!

Personal

I am ethnically Chinese, born in Vietnam. The first five years of my life was spent with my family trying to escape the Vietnamese Communist. There were many failed attempts, before we finally succeeded by escaping on a fishing boat. I was six years-old when we arrived in the U.S.; making me a 1.5 generation Chinese Vietnamese American. It’s a mark of pride to be one of the few Vietnamese bilingual Psychologists helping the large under-served Vietnamese population here in Orange County.

Issues of diversity and being multi-culturally competent are important to me because I did not grow up in the U.S. around people who looked like me. I have intimate knowledge of what it’s like to be the “other”. So, whether your difference is in race, culture, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, gender, or weight, I see you beyond these markers.

Education & Training

Igraduated summa cum laude from The University of San Francisco with a BA degree in Psychology. I earned my doctorate degree (Psy,D.) at the California School of Professional Psychology, Los Angeles (APA accredited). I completed two and half years of post-doctoral training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy at Rose City Counseling Center, with a one-year specialty training in Trauma. After becoming licensed as a Clinical Psychologist, I pursued further training in psychoanalysis at Newport Psychoanalytic Institute. For two years I engaged in course-work, group consultation, supervision, and personal analysis. In addition, I also taught a course on multicultural issues and diversity to doctoral-level students at the California School of Professional Psychology for a number of years.

Treatment Approach

I treat patients from a strength-based perspective.  What that means is that I believe you are more capable than you think, stronger than you feel, and more loved than you know.  Our work together will help you arrive at that realization, and you will use that knowledge to live a more satisfying and fulfilling life.
